CHENNAI: The police arrested five persons belonging to Punjab on charges of attempting to obtain U.S. visa by submitting fake documents here on Friday. Following a complaint, the Royapettah police registered a case of cheating and forgery against them. Investigations revealed that Amar Jothi Singh, Arjinder Singh and Amar Singh allegedly attempted to obtain visas with the help of Baljot Singh and Sundar Singh by giving an address in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, while they all hailed from Punjab. They claimed that they were going to the U.S., on an invitation, to participate in a religious musical event organised by a Sikh Foundation there. On a scrutiny of the documents, the U.S. Consulate officials found that they had been forged. After registering cases against all the five, the police produced them before a court. A senior officer said some agents operating from Hyderabad furnished fake addresses to applicants for a hefty fee. A police team has been despatched to Hyderabad to secure the agent, he said. A few months ago, an actor from Mumbai and her woman assistant were arrested on charges of submitting fake documents to the U.S. authorities. During investigation, the police found that an agent from Hyderabad was behind the offence.
