VIJAYAWADA: Krishna district Collector Shailaja Ramaiyer on Saturday asked officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department to focus on removal of encroachments on both sides of national and State highways. Presiding over a meeting of the district road safety authority, she observed that due to several encroachments, roads were getting narrowed, resulting in frequent accidents. Observing that many youngsters were not following road rules while riding motorcycles, she felt that there was a strong need to conduct training programmes for the youth to make them adhere to traffic rules and driving within the prescribed speed limit. Vijayawada Sub-Collector Gaurav Uppal observed that drivers of Volvo buses were not following road rules. There were several encroachments on the stretch between Penamaluru and Kankipadu. Signalling systemAssistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) V. Suresh Babu said there was a need to revise the signalling system at places where service roads were merging with the highways. Installation of additional signal lights and constructing road dividers near the Anjaneyaswami temple at Machavaram, and Punnami hotel and Kummaripalem centre on NH-9 were the other suggestions made by him. The Collector announced that a decision would be taken on these suggestions after conducting a joint inspection with the officials of all departments concerned. APSRTC Regional Manager M. Seethapathi and others were present.
