BJP: out with it, is LPG freeze coming?

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Accusing the United Progressive Alliance government of encouraging “hoarding” and creating an artificial shortage of petroleum products, the BJP on Saturday asked it to explain the reported move to freeze new LPG connections, fix a per family quota for LPG cylinders and curtail open market sale of petrol and diesel.

At a press conference here, BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad wanted to know if the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry had indeed issued such directions to oil marketing companies.

While queues for LPG connections were completely eliminated during the NDA regime, the UPA government was pushing the country back to a “quota raj” in distribution of cylinders, he said. “We would like to know from the government if an LPG freeze is being imposed and expansion of new retail outlets of petrol and diesel has also been frozen.”

“If the recent skyrocketing of prices of essential commodities was not enough, now the people will have to get rationed supply of petroleum products and forced supply of premium fuels.”
