MV tax can be paid at post offices also

Postmasters to make endorsements

CHENNAI: Those who pay motor vehicle tax quarterly or at such periodical intervals can remit it at nearby post offices, says a senior official of the Transport Department.

At present, the taxpayers have to go to regional transport offices for paying the tax. Instead, they can now pay it at any nearby post office.

Initially, 300 out of the over 800 post offices will be covered under this arrangement. Postmasters will be authorised to make endorsements on the registration certificates.

The post offices are an additional outlet; those who wish to pay tax at the RTOs can do so.

The arrangement will initially be limited to vehicles that do not have to be produced at the RTOs. The government has in principle approved the tie-up with the post offices. A formal order is expected in a month.

Higher revenue

During 2007-2008, the Transport Department netted a revenue of around Rs. 1,495 crore, a growth of 17.4 per cent. This is the highest in recent years, says the official.

Better enforcement at checkpoints and the introduction of service charges are among the factors that have contributed to the increase. In the previous years, the increase in the revenue at checkpoints was in the range of 10 per cent to 20 per cent. During 2007-2008, it was 43 per cent. In absolute terms, this accounted for Rs. 53 crore.

During 2003-2004, the growth in the revenue collection was 26 per cent. But this was due to a steep revision in the rates. For 2008-2009, the government has fixed a tentative target of Rs. 1,707 crore.
