VIJAYAWADA: Cashing in on summer vacation for children and elders, two leading book stores on the Karl Marx Road in the city began special exhibitions with attractive discounts on Saturday.

While the Visalandhra Book House launched a general book exhibition, the New Students Book Centre launched an exhibition of educational and entertainment CDs.

Animal Husbandry Minister Mandali Buddha Prasad, a book lover, launched the exhibition at Visalandhra Book House and lauded the efforts of the Left parties in keeping the ancient literature and arts alive.

“Whenever I have some leisure time, I prefer to spend it in Visalandhra Book House,” he said, adding, “I have a group of friends, who love reading Telugu literature. I often speak to them and note down the names of the titles they categorise as worth reading. I buy those books whenever I visit this book house.”

Mr. Buddha Prasad also released a compilation of Vedas, translated into Telugu by noted scholar Dasarathi Rangacharya. He said the fact that the book house was marketing books on Vedas clearly indicated that it was not confining itself to selling only Left literature.

Special offer

Book house manager V. Kanaka Rao said the book exhibition was an annual event, where book lovers could enjoy a special discount of up to 50 per cent on select titles. “Though the original price of the six volumes on Vedas is Rs. 1,500, one can get them for just Rs. 1,200. Special discounts are also being offered on old and new books,” he said, adding academic books like the publications of the Telugu Akademi were also on display.

‘Visalandhra’ Telugu daily editor E. Nageswara Rao, CPI city secretary K. Subba Raju and MLC Ilapuram Venkaiah and others were present.

At the New Students Book Centre, exhibition of educational CDs was inaugurated by G. Rama Raju, director of Laila group of companies, while K. Chandrasekaran, Regional General Manager of The Hindu, launched the exhibition of CDs for children and general public. Mr. Subba Raju was present.

Proprietor B. Babjee said this was the seventh year in succession that an exhibition of CDs was being organised to cater to the growing interest among elders and children alike for CDs. The 11-day exhibition would offer a 10 per cent discount on all CDs.
