Navy, Coast Guard intensify patrol

Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: The Navy and Coast Guard have intensified patrolling along the 188-km coast in Nagapattinam district and security has been stepped up following information of possible intrusion of some anti-social elements and also some cadres from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard had been reviewing the security aspects along the Nagapattinam coast and had decided to step up its vigil owing to the continued fighting between the LTTE and Sri Lankan Army in the island nation.

Fishermen venturing into the sea from coastal villages in the district had already been warned that they would be taken to task if they did not carry their identity cards. At present, they were venturing into the sea only in fibreglass boats and catamarans as fishing by mechanised boats and trawlers were banned for fishing till May 30.
