TIRUPUR: The residents of powerloom twin towns of Karumathampatty and Somanur near here are disappointed over the delay in commencement of work for constructing a rail overbridge here. The busy railway line between Erode and Coimbatore passes through these towns and divide them into two.

As the railway gate is closed nearly 100 times a day, the frequent closure causes much inconvenience to the motorists and passengers.

Stating that the frequent closure of gates is proving to be a hurdle for the public, Karumathampatty town panchayat chairman A.C. Mahalingam urged the authorities to take up the work immediately in the interest of the public.

Each time the gate opened after the closure of around 10 minutes, hundreds of vehicles pile up on either side and leads to traffic snarls often due to the narrow road, he pointed out.

Once the rail overbridge comes up, containers and other vehicles could pass through without any hurdle on this stretch.

Stoutly denying that there had been no delay in taking up the work, M. Sreerangan, divisional engineer of the highways department (projects), said a detailed project report would be ready by end of this month. “As the government sanctioned over 20 rail overbridges across the State, DPR will be ready only for this bridge. Certainly there is no delay on our part. We did not even wait for the appointment of consultants to prepare the alignment,” he said.

According to him, tenders will be called by this month-end and works would be taken up in next two to three months for the over Rs. 11-crore work. The bridge will roughly have 400-metre length on either side and have two lanes.
