dated May 17, 1958: Sputnik III

The Soviet news agency, Tass, which announced the launching of the new Soviet Earth satellite, Sputnik III, said that the launching rocket is following the Sputnik in its orbit. The massive third Sputnik, the largest man-made satellite yet achieved may have been specially designed to land again intact. The extra weight suggests that a special heavily protected cone has been created in an effort to solve the problem of its re-entry through the earth’s atmosphere without being burned up — as the previous Sputniks were.
