KOZHIKODE: The fiery character of Kannagi, heroine of the Tamil classic ‘Silapadikaram’, finds a slot in the Kalajatha being taken out by the Kudumbasree District Mission as part of its tenth anniversary celebrations. Through ‘Njan Stree,’ women would be reminded of Kannagi’s determination to stand up and fight injustice, the mission’s officials said. According to them the kalajatha is part of an awareness campaign to weed out unjust practices in society, especially those directed against women. It had been receiving tremendous response at the centres where it was being staged, they added. Through songs, dance-drama and skit the jatha protests against social evils besides highlighting the need to protect nature. It calls on women not to be confined to kitchens but be proponents on a collective basis, to combat the ills of society. Women are urged to come out of cocooned existence and be equal partners in the development process and nation building. Besides women empowerment and environmental conservation, importance of hygiene, sanitation and waste disposal are also being projected. The kalajatha was inaugurated by K. Latika, MLA, at Thotilpalam on May 8. It will be staged in 50 grama panchayat, municipal and corporation centres. It will end at the Corporation Stadium on May 20 where the State-level anniversary celebrations are to be launched by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan.
