MGU case hearing on May 19

Kochi: The Kerala High Court adjourned to May 19 the hearing on writ petitions challenging Mahatma Gandhi University’s action in introducing common entrance test and allotment of seats in certain self-financing courses in colleges under the university.

The petitions were filed by the All Kerala Private Arts and Science Unaided College Management Association and 15 colleges belonging to the minority communities.

The petitioners pointed out that the common entrance test and centralised allotment of seats had not been incorporated in the Mahatma Gandhi University Law. It was introduced not in a uniform manner. They pointed out that a large number of non-self-financing courses were untouched.

Besides, the criteria prescribed for selection and admission was irrational and arbitrary. The entrance test was introduced not for improving excellence of education but with ulterior motives, they said.
