Alert issued over mosquito breeding

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Hospitals in the Capital have been asked to check and prevent breeding of mosquitoes on their premises to ensure that malaria and dengue are kept under control this year.

“We held a meeting with senior health officials from our hospitals recently and told them to ensure that they check mosquito breeding in their hospital premises. So far we have had only six cases of malaria and no cases of dengue. We are keen to ensure that these diseases don’t take a toll this summer. The Health Department has also provided doctors in our hospitals with a treatment plan and educated them about the need to maintain general hygiene during this season,” said the Health Officer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Dr. N.K. Yadav.

Improvement

The department also has good news to share this season with the city having recorded only four cases of cholera till date this year. “This is a major improvement when we consider that the recorded cases of cholera last year stood at 224, and 296 cases were recorded in 2006. The reduced number of cases this year can be attributed to good awareness programmes, better quality of water supply and quality health services,” adds Dr. Yadav.

The Health Department has also released an advisory asking people to be cautious this season. “To ensure that the people have a comfortable time during the coming months we have issued an advisory asking people to ensure that they maintain a general level of hygiene, make sure that their drinking water is clean and that they stay away from cut fruits sold in the market,” said Dr. Yadav.
