“Meeting held by Vice-Chairman not valid” AIADMK cadres stage demonstration RAJAPALAYAM: The meeting of Rajapalayam municipal council could not discuss any subject for the successive eighth time here on Friday. In the first three instances, the meeting was not held despite having been convened. Simmering rivalry between Congress and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members resulted in the next four meetings being adjourned within minutes without taking up any subject for discussion. The Regional Director of Municipal Administration had issued a show-cause notice seeking explanation from the council as to why it should not be dissolved owing to consecutive failures to conduct meetings. As soon as the meeting began on Friday evening, the Chairperson, R. Rathinammal, asked an AIADMK councillor to apologise for having allegedly assaulted a Congress member during the last meeting. However, the AIADMK members objected to it saying nothing of that sort had happened and refused to apologise. Suddenly, the Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members, led by Ms. Rathinammal, left the council hall. However, 23 members belonging to the AIADMK and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam stayed back. “We discussed and passed five out of six subjects in the agenda. We also rejected the show-cause notice,” Vice-Chairman, S.A. Manikanda Raja (AIADMK), said. Stating that the meetings were being deliberately not held because of “vested interests” of the Chairperson, Mr. Manikanda Raja said that they (AIADMK alliance) wanted the council to continue and were ready to cooperate in conducting meetings. “Let the Government disqualify the Chairperson for not allowing the meeting,” Mr. Manikanda Raja said. However, the Commissioner, D. Mony, said that the meeting held by the Vice-Chairman was not valid. On the outcome of the show-cause notice, he said that it was up to the Government to decide the issue. Unusually, no one except the councillors was allowed into the hall. Journalists and news photographers were denied entry into the hall. Earlier, hundreds of AIADMK cadres, led by party leader, Manoj Pandiyan, and district secretary, K.K. Sivasamy, staged a demonstration in front of the municipal office protesting the show-cause notice.
