Students belong to Commerce and Humanities Salaries range from Rs. 1.10 lakh - 3.6 lakh per year BHUBANESWAR: It’s the time to hurry up for the non-IT and non-management students and seize the opportunities coming in their way. Students of different streams of Commerce and Humanities of Utkal University have been spotted by the reputed companies, which are scouting for talents. As many as 48 students have already been absorbed by five companies in the campus interviews recently and a sizeable of them belong to departments like women studies, political science, zoology, rural development and anthropology. The campus placements are likely to gain momentum with several more companies interested to come to this premiere university of the State. “Earlier the focus of companies was on IT streams. But now as the economy is getting diversified, new openings are surfacing for non-technical students. We have also changed our attention. We are targeting non-IT sector including social sciences,” Sarit Kumar Panda, Placement Officer of Utkal University Placement Cell, said. He said the five companies, which conducted interviews were health care major Apollo Hospital, micro-finance company Spandana Spoorthy, Innovative Financial Services Ltd, Capital IQ, financial research wing of Standard and Poor’s, IT firm Delphys and PRADAN, a national-level voluntary organisation. Salaries between Rs. 1.10 lakh and Rs. 3.6 lakh per annum were offered to these students. Similarly, CAPART, a non-profit wing of the Ministry of Rural Development, has given its consent to come down to the campus soon. Moreover, a few IT giants also informed the placement cell to drive a job fair to meet their requirements. Mr. Panda said, “We are not lack of talents, but we need to upgrade our skills to become employable. Our focus should be on communication skill as well as generating awareness among the students.” The university authorities have drafted some innovative concepts to help students in getting jobs at earliest. “We are creating placement volunteers among students who would take a lead for making their friends aware. Students will join together to collect information and job opportunities from different medias,” he said. Utkal University has about 46 departments, of which 16 are self-financed courses, 27 post-graduate departments and two departments of innovative courses. Last year, 92 students were absorbed by different firms.
