Bangalore: Although the authorities have contained the gastroenteritis from Shamanna Garden to surrounding areas, the source for the outbreak of the epidemic still eludes them. Meanwhile, no fresh case of gastroenteritis has been reported from Shamanna Gaden area in Jagjeevanram Nagar on Thursday. A majority of the cases were tested negative for cholera. So far only one person, from Mahadevapura area on city outskirts, has been found infected with cholera. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has been maintaining that the consumption of stale or infected food and fruits was the cause for the epidemic as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) categorically stated that water supplied in the locality was safe. The BBMP and BWSSB were taken aback on Thursday when the Public Health Institute declared two water samples collected from Shamanna Garden were not safe for drinking as it contained e-coli bacteria, which causes gastroenteritis. However, BWSSB Executive Engineer (West) H.R. Narayanappa on Thursday maintained that water supplied through the BWSSB pipelines were safe for drinking and the BBMP had not collected water samples from BWSSB’s taps but from stored water in two houses. Had the water been contaminated, the BWSSB and the BBMP officials said, there would have been a major outbreak of the epidemic as over 1,400 houses in the area used water supplied by the BWSSB. Only the people of 1st Cross had been affected, they pointed out.
