Young fashion struts its stuff

TRENDY: Children displaying fashion pieces designed by students of NIFT at the Graduation Day in Bangalore.

BANGALORE: Young imagination took full flight at the Graduation Show 2008 of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) here on Wednesday.

NIFT, which, established by the Union Ministry of Textiles, awards its own degrees in the field of fashion education, gave away degrees to the first batch of students of its four-year degree programme.

Shalini Rajneesh of the Department of Women and Children, Karnataka, was the chief guest and A. Radhakrishna, Registrar, NIFT, was present. The Graduation Show began with a short address by Dr. Rajneesh who encouraged the students by saying: “You are in the right place now. Bangalore is currently the garment hub and professionals like you will make it a fashion hub too.”

The programme moved on with a small audio visual about the innovative ideas to improve apparel design in India that were put across by the students themselves. Finally came the most awaited section, where the Niftians gave an eye-catching display of the apparels, specially designed and stitched by the students. Their creativity was reflected in apparel designing as well as the themes chosen for the respective collections.

Some of the innovative themes were “A little bit of king, A little bit of queen”, “Barbie syndrome”, “Monk’s day out”, “Sister act”, and “Rodeo events”.

To encourage its students, NIFT organised awards in various categories such as best design collection award, bagged by designer Hamen Das for his Dream-o-Mania, a colourful and trendy street wear collection for men. The the best constructed collection award was won by Darla Sivaram Prasad for his collection Afro-Pop, a fusion of hues, fabrics and contemporary silhouettes.

The award for the most creative and innovative collection was bagged by Hina Sandhu for her collection Eloquent Silences’, a collection of modern clothing for women incorporated with elements of men’s clothing such as colour, garment components and detailing.
