COMMENDING THEM: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi with toppers in Plus-Two examinations after presenting cash prizes at the Secretariat in Chennai on Thursday. School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu is in the picture. CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday gave away cash prizes to five students who had scored high marks at the State-level and district-level and also studied Tamil as a subject. The scheme was introduced in 1996 during the previous DMK regime. The government will also fund the under-graduate studies of these students. This year two students who secured the first rank received Rs 15,000 each from the Chief Minister. They are R. Dharani, a student of Vidyavihas Girls Higher Secondary School, Namakkal district, who scored 1182 out of 1200, and M. Rajeshkumar, student of St. John’s Higher Secondary School, Chengalpattu, who secured 1181 marks. A. Ramya of the Kalaimagal Kalvi Nilayam Girls Higher Secondary School, Erode, and S. Thalapathikumara Vikram of Vidyavihas Higher Secondary School in Namakkal secured the second rank. They were given Rs 12,000 each. K. Deepa, a student of S.RV.Women Higher Secondary School, Rasipuram, got Rs 10,000 for securing the third rank. The Chief Minister also handed over the certificates assuring them of financial assistance for their higher education.
