Higher success rate in higher secondary exams

Education Minister M.A. Baby announced the results on Thursday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Among the school-going higher secondary students, 81.05 per cent of the students who appeared in the public examinations conducted in March this year won eligibility to pursue higher education.

Announcing the results at a press conference here on Thursday, Education Minister M.A. Baby said 42.46 per cent of the students from the Open School category too won eligibility for higher studies. The success rate among school-going students last year was 72.30 per cent and that among Open School students 42.01 per cent.

In all, 4,00,613 students had taken the higher secondary examinations this year. Of them, 2,55,889 were in the school-going category and 70,456 in the Open School category. As many as 67,103 students took the examinations in ‘compartments,’ which means that they wrote the examinations in specific subjects in which they had failed earlier. And 7,165 students wrote the examinations under the old scheme.

In the school-going category, the pass (eligibility to pursue higher studies) percentage is 83.71 in the science group, 76.69 in humanities group, 78.9 in commerce group, 75.37 in technical group and 73.21 per cent in the arts group.

In the Open School category, the pass percentage is 37.93 in the science group, 45.63 in humanities group and 41.40 in the commerce group.

Mr. Baby said 62 schools recorded 100 per cent result, seven of them government schools, 17 aided schools and 38 unaided schools. As many as 1,334 students scored ‘A+’ grade in all subjects. Of them, 224 are from government schools, 883 from aided schools and 227 from unaided schools.

‘A+’ grade in all subjects is the highest in the science group, 1,219 students winning it. Twenty-three students in the humanities group, 78 students in commerce group and 14 students in the technical group also received ‘A+’ in all subjects.

The Minister also announced the results of the vocational higher secondary examinations held in March. Of the 24,460 school-going students who took the examinations, 19,862 (81.21 per cent) won eligibility for certificates in part one and part two. Of them, 17,117 (69.98 per cent) are eligible to pursue higher studies.
