Rs.12-crore outlay for agriculture development

Farmers to get 50 per cent subsidy for purchase of machines

Precision farming for 90 acres of sugarcane and cotton crop


NAGAPATTINAM: Agriculture department has chalked out a Rs.12 crore plan for agriculture development in Cauvery Delta region of Nagapattinam district under the National Agricultural Development Programme (NADP) during the current year.

A senior official of the Agriculture department here told The Hindu that the plan had been sent to the State Government for approval.

He pointed out that it covered agriculture, horticulture, agricultural engineering and agricultural marketing.

The official pointed out that as a major area of the district was irrigated by a well-developed canal irrigation system of Cauvery and cultivation was fully depending on the release of Cauvery water from the Mettur Dam, a lion’s share of Rs.4.17 crore had been earmarked for agriculture development followed by horticulture (Rs.4.09 crore), agricultural engineering (Rs.2.5 crore) and agricultural marketing (Rs.1.24 crore).

Under the NADP, the farmers will get 50 per cent subsidy for purchase of power tillers, harvesting and planting machines, paddy seeds and development activities like creation of farm ponds, setting up of agricultural information centres and eradication of rodents would be taken up in the district.

The Agriculture department is planning to cover 90 acres of sugarcane and cotton crop under precision farming method under the NADP.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, has also proposed to set up automatic weather stations in Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam, Sembanarkovil, Sirkazhi and Mayiladuturai in the district, he said.
