Mamata for talks to end Darjeeling stalemate

Special Correspondent

Blames Centre, State for unrest

“Parties trying to safeguard their political interests”

“We feel there must be a solution”

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said on Tuesday that the Centre and the State Government were responsible for the unrest in the Darjeeling hills in the wake of the call by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) for a separate Gorkhaland state to be carved out of the hills and certain areas contiguous to it in the plains of north Bengal.

The parties heading the two governments were busy trying to safeguard their political interests and “were not keen to solve the problem and ensure amity among the people of the plains and the hills,” Ms. Banerjee said on arrival at the New Jalpaiguri railway station.

The Trinamool Congress is in favour of negotiations between the parties for an “amicable settlement of the problem,” Ms. Banerjee said. “We feel there must be a solution,” she said.

The summer heat took a toll on Ms. Banerjee while campaigning for her party for the May 18 panchayat elections in north Bengal’s Cooch Behar district.

She complained of dizziness after addressing a rally in Toofangunj. She was advised rest and left for another public meeting in Mathabhanga.
