NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction of property caused by the earthquake that struck China’s Sichuan province on Monday and offered immediate relief assistance, if required.

In a letter to his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao, Dr. Singh wrote that the people of India shared the grief of their brethren in China and expressed confidence that the people of China would overcome this tragedy.

He said India was ready to offer any assistance that may be needed at this difficult time.
