Mulayam Singh

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh on Tuesday assailed the raid by the Uttar Pradesh police on the Kolkata residence of party general secretary Amar Singh and threatened to expose the “misdeeds” of Chief Minister Mayawati. The former Chief Minister claimed he had enough material at his disposal.

Distributes CD

A compact disc was distributed to reinforce the SP chief’s charge that the raid was carried out due to political vendetta and to harass Mr. Amar Singh.

According to the former Chief Minister, the raid was conducted on Monday night and it continued till early Tuesday.

Mr. Mulayam Singh told newspersons here that the basis of the raid was a “rath” or luxury bus, which was used to ferry the family of actor Amitabh Bachchan to Daulatpur in Barabanki. The bus carried the registration number of Hamirpur district in Uttar Pradesh. An FIR had been lodged.

The SP president claimed that the investigating officer (K.K. Dwivedi) had admitted in the CD that pressure was being exerted on him by the Chief Minister and other officials, including the Director-General of Police, to frame Mr. Amar Singh and Mr. Bachchan in the case.

The SP president said that in the past, a factory owned by Mr. Amar Singh in Ghaziabad was raided on grounds of power theft.

Stating that Ms. Mayawati had threatened to send him and Mr. Amar Singh to jail when her government came to power, the former Chief Minister referred to her move, during her earlier regime, to impose the Prevention of Terrorism Act on him, his son Akhilesh Yadav and Mr. Amar Singh.

Mr. Mulayam Singh said that neither he nor Mr. Bachchan or Mr. Amar Singh feared going to jail. He dared the Chief Minister to arrest him when he moved out of the party office. On the contrary, Ms. Mayawati would have to spend a long time in jail, he said.

Mr. Mulayam Singh wanted to know the source of her gifts and how was Rs.2 crore managed within three days during her recent visit to Bhopal.

“Seizure of explosives”

The former Chief Minister referred to the seizure of two and half quintals of explosive material from the Orai railway station during his regime and alleged that two Ministers of the Mayawati regime were involved in it.

He claimed that she (Ms. Mayawati) had requested Mr. Amar Singh in the Rajya Sabha then to get the case dropped as it involved her partymen.
