IN CONTROL: Nikolay Davydenko eased past Ivan Ljubicic to enter the third round of the Hamburg Open.

Hamburg: Russian fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko helped himself to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ivan Ljubicic to reach the third round of the Hamburg Masters on Tuesday.

Davydenko took advantage of a stream of unforced errors from Croatian Ljubicic to seal an easy win in one hour 24 minutes on the red clay court.

The World No. 4 has one Masters Series title to his name already this season, after beating Nadal in the final on a hard court in Miami, and he has made a decent start to the clay-court season.

“Playing in Miami was much easier for me than playing on clay but maybe winning that tournament has helped mentally,” Davydenko said at a news conference.

“My tennis is still the same but when you feel good you try to make more winners.”

Bhupathi-Knowles pair advances

Meanwhile, Mahesh Bhupathi and his partner Mark Knowles lost in straight sets to bow out of the first round of the doubles event.

The Indo-Bahamian duo lost 2-6, 3-6 against the American pair of James Blake and Mardy Fish in the pre-quarterfinal tie.

The Indian in fray Leander Paes and his new Spanish partner Tommy Robredo got a bye in their first round.

They next face the formidable third seed Israeli duo of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the pre-quarterfinals.

The results: At Hamburg: ATP Hamburg Open: Second round: Nikolay Davydenko bt Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 6-1; Fernando Verdasco bt Michael Llodra 6-2, 6-0. First round: Janko Tipsarevic bt Andreas Beck 3-6, 6-3, 6-1; Jose Acasuso bt Kristof Vliegen 5-2 (retd.); Potito Starace bt Luis Horna 6-3, 4-2 (retd.); Carlos Moya bt Julien Benneteau 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7).
