Melody Queen: Playback singer P. Suseela NEW DELHI: The Delhi Tamil Sangam conferred the prestigious title of “Mellisai Perarasi” (Melody Queen) this past weekend on P. Suseela, the seasoned Tamil playback singer and recipient of Padma Bhushan award from the President this year, in recognition of her yeoman service to music. The DMK Member of Parliament from Tiruchi, Siva, gave away the title. Mr. Siva, who presided over the ceremony here to felicitate the Padma awardees from Tamil Nadu, lauded the Sangam’s efforts in honouring the awardees within a day of their receiving the high honours from President Pratibha Patil. He said each of the awardees—Viswanathan Anand (chess player, Padma Vibhushan); P. Suseela (Padma Bhushan); and Seerkazhi Sivachidambaram (eminent singer), Yella Venkateswara Rao (mridangist) and C.U. Velmurugendran (medicine) (all Padma Shri) had won laurels in their chosen fields. (Mr. Anand and Dr. Velmurugendran were not present at the ceremony). Congress MP T. Subbarami Reddy announced a cash award of Rs.1 lakh to the Sangam for its services to Tamil music, art and literature. Yadarthaa K. Penneswaran, Editor of Vadukku Vaasal, said the success of the awardees was worthy of emulation. Sangam president M.N. Krishnamani and secretary R. Mukunthan felicitated the winners. Ms. Suseela enthralled the audience by singing a few lines from select songs.
