TIRUCHI: A verbal duel over non-supply of drinking water resulted in a clash between two sides in Periya Karuppur village near Jeeyapuram on Sunday night claiming the life of the brother of a panchayat president in the early hours on Monday. Five persons including the panchayat president of the village P. Ramachandran (38) are undergoing medical treatment in the city. The deceased identified as Mahendran (25) was the brother of Ramachandran. Police sources said Aandi (58) along with his sons Suresh Kumar (30), a police constable attached with the Tiruchi City Armed Reserve and Mohanraj (36) argued with Ramachandran over non-supply of drinking water to their street. Water supply, it is said, had been cut owing to some repairs in the pipe. MotiveSources said that Aandi who had lost to Ramachandran during the local body elections reportedly had a motive since then against the latter. Ramachandran, it is said, had made some temporary arrangements for water supply. The sources added that Aandi along with his sons Suresh Kumar and Mohanraj entered into a verbal duel with Ramachandran and allegedly attacked the latter, his brother Mahendran and one Karthik with sticks and sharp weapons. Ramachandran and his brother retaliated and allegedly attacked Aandi and his sons. The attacks led to injuries on both sides. Mahendran died on the way to the Government Hospital here where Aandi, Suresh Kumar and Mohanraj have been admitted. Ramachandran and Karthik who also sustained injuries have been admitted to a private hospital in the city. The Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi Rural A. Kaliyamurthy said that Aandi, Suresh Kumar, Mohanraj and Samikannu had been arrested. The Jeeyapuram police have registered a case of murder.
