“Restore old bus fares”

MADURAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to restore the older fares for buses that were taking Ellis Nagar bridge instead of the circuitous route.

In a statement, its urban district secretary, R. Annadurai, said that buses going to Fatima College, Koodal Nagar, Kochadai and Virattipaththu were initially operated from the western entrance of railway station as the Ellis Nagar road over bridge was under construction. Later, they were operated from Periyar bus stand and were diverted through Kalavasal, By-pass Road and Vasanth Nagar.

The distance of the journey increased because of the diversion and the fares were raised with the increase in the number of stages. However, the same fares were being collected though buses were operated through the Ellis Nagar ROB.

Stating that the additional fare of 50 paise to Re. 1 was unjustifiable, Mr. Annadurai sought the Collector’s intervention to restore the older fare.
