GUNTUR: In one of the major job melas organised by the Department of Youth Services Training and Employment Programme (STEP) about 1,100 candidates attended here on Monday where four companies deputed their representatives to shortlist candidates suiting their requirement.

STEP Chief Executive Officer V. Mark told The Hindu that it was an overwhelming response to job fair, which they had not expected and three companies were recruiting people for employment within the district, so they preferred local candidates. Ambica Security and Detective Services needs 100 security guards all over the State and of them 40 were for Samshabad Airport with an initial pay of Rs.6,000. For those employed elsewhere or in Guntur district the pay would be Rs.4,000, he added. Final selection for Samshabad Airport security guards would be done on Monday.

Star Medical and Health Insurance Company selected 70 candidates from Piduguralla on Sunday and on Monday it shortlisted 300 applicants, of whom majority were likely to get Rs.3,600 at the beginning and some would be paid Rs.10,000 per month. They were recruiting people for postings in Narsaraopet, Tenali, Guntur and Ongole. Meanwhile, Big C, mobile phones shop, proposes to open second outlet in Guntur and it plans to take 70 people with a beginning salary of Rs.2,500 per month and incentives on sales. After the probation they will be paid Rs.7,000.

"Our aim is to provide employment to rural youths at a place closer to their house so that they could save money," said Mr. Mark and added that two more job melas would be organised at Bapatla and Piduguralla in the next two to three days. The Tata Indicom also recruited 70 candidates with a beginning of Rs.3,600 per month in Guntur district.
