LONDON: Pakistan returned to the Commonwealth on Monday after its suspension from the 53-member body was revoked following restoration of democracy in that country. Pakistan was suspended at the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting in Kampala on November, 2007, following President Prevez Musharraf’s decision to impose Emergency, curb media freedom and arrest opposition activists. His actions were held to be inconsistent with the Commonwealth’s fundamental principles. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), comprising Foreign Ministers from nine member countries. The group noted that since its suspension, Pakistan had taken “positive steps to fulfil its obligations in accordance with Commonwealth fundamental values and principles.”
