DISCUSSION: The general body meeting of CITU’s State Express Transport Corporation wing in progress in Tirunelveli. TIRUNELVELI: The Centre of Indian Trade Union’s State Express Transport Corporation wing has urged the Tamil Nadu Government ensure better maintenance of the recently introduced long distance ultra-deluxe and air-conditioned buses. The district general body of the union said the costly ultra-deluxe and air-conditioned coaches, which were enjoying overwhelming patronage from the commuters, should be maintained in the best possible manner since the public sector undertaking was facing stiff competition from the private omni bus operators. Moreover, the union also appealed to the State Government to “regulate” the ‘sister transport corporations’ from operating buses to far-off destinations and restrain them from operating the hi-tech coaches at the same time when the SETC buses were leaving for their destinations. Another resolution said the Government should resolve the pension-related dispute at the earliest. District president of the wing, T. Jayapandi presided over the meeting, in which CITU officer-bearers R. Karumalaiyan, Rajangam, P. Muthukrishnan and others spoke.
