The BJP leader advocates ‘Hindutva economics’ Call to establish research centre to explore the utilities of arecanut SULLIA (DAKSHINA KANNADA): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi addressed a larger audience on Sunday compared to his previous visit in the last moth when he visited Puttur. Although it was a very hot and humid Sunday, it turned out to be a pleasant rally for Mr. Modi, compared to the conditions witnessed during his previous visit to the district. Mr. Modi was here to campaign for S. Angara, who has represented Sullia thrice in a row. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers believed that the success of this rally was largely because of the support the BJP, particularly Mr. Angara, enjoys here. Mr. Modi, in his address, fired the first salvo at the media. He flayed some reports that had predicted that the BJP would not get a clear mandate in these elections. “Political pundits had made similar projections ahead of Gujarat elections. But I still won,” he said and predicted a similar result in Karnataka as well. Mr. Modi said that successive State governments had failed to set up rubber and arecanut processing industries to complement their large-scale cultivation here. He claimed that Hindu priests of yore had reserved a special place for arecanut in their religious practices. He called for the installation of a research institute or a special commission to find out the various utilities of arecanut.Expounding on his understanding of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles, Mr. Modi said that Mr. Gandhi was a very religious man and a devotee of the mythical character, Ram and a worshipper of the cow. “Cow slaughter is banned in Gujarat only. We will protect the cow if the BJP comes to power in Karnataka,” he said.
