TAMBARAM: The Pallavaram municipality has drawn up a plan for improvements to ‘paal keni,’ a temple tank in Zamin Pallavaram.

Residents living near the tank said the waterbody was in pristine condition till 30 years ago. The quality of its water began to deteriorate in the past couple of decades, mainly because of encroachments, sewage discharge and dumping of waste.

While it originally spread on 20 acres, the area has now come down by a couple of acres, said T. Rajesh, a painter, whose family has been living in the neighbourhood for three generations. “Water used to be crystal clear, and we could see the bottom surface even when water was 15-foot-deep. Water was sweet, and we used to drink it directly, hence the name ‘paal kulam’,” he said.

Despite contamination of the tank, water drawn from domestic wells in houses near the water body was still good enough for cooking purposes. Welcoming plans for improving this tank, residents said the renovation should be completed at the earliest.

Pallavaram municipal chairman E. Karunanidhi said the civic body expected Rs.10 lakh in aid from the Centre. Initially, the bund would be marked and strengthened, and then measures to prevent sewage discharge would be taken.

After this, deepening and desilting, landscaping, formation of a walkers’ pathway and illumination would be taken up.

The first phase was estimated to cost Rs. 20 lakh.

Officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department said they were not aware of the exact date in which the temple was built. But all that they said was the temple was built during the Pallava period. And the ‘paal kulam,’ too, was an ancient waterbody, but not as old as the temple itself.
