Twenty-one players share lead

Namakkal: Twenty-one players, with two points each, were in joint lead in the boys’ section after the second round in the Tamil Nadu State under-17 chess championship, organised by the Namakkal District Chess Foundation, at the SKV MHSS on Sunday.

In the girls’ section, National under-11 champion P.V. Nandhithaa of Namakkal lost to top seed Pon. N. Krithika of Kancheepuram.

ICF wins opener

State champion ICF (Chennai) chalked out a comfortable 74-61 win over BSNL (New Delhi) in its opening league fixture of the 50th all India basketball tournament for the Nachimuthu Gounder Cup for men at the VOC Park Corporation Sports Complex courts in Coimbatore on Saturday night.

In the seventh all India tournament for the CRI Pumps Trophy for women, Madras Nationals (Chennai) opened its campaign with a 73-66 win over South Central Railway (Secunderabad).

Thangaparamasivam shines

M. Thangaparamasivam (170 not out & four for 33) helped Jahir Cricket Club defeat Sachin CC by 63 runs in the Canara Bank-Dindigul District Cricket Association first division league in Dindigul on Sunday. P. Anburaj’s five for 26, including hat-trick, and a solid knock of 82 by W.R. Arun Pious helped Sri Vasantha Sweets CC defeat Majestic CC by 87 runs in another match.

The scores: Jahir CC 278 for five in 42 overs (M. Thangaparamasivam 170 n.o.) bt Sachin CC 215 for five in 42 overs (W.R. Solem Jeyaseelan 104 n.o., Thangaparamasivam four for 33).

Gilbert is PSS’s hero

Gilbert’s century helped Pondicherry Sara Sports defeat AR CC by 103 runs and win the title at the State-level cricket tournament in Cuddalore on Sunday.

The scores (final): Pondicherry Sara Sports 201 for eight in 30 overs (Gilbert 100) bt AR CC 98 in 21.5 overs (Jayakumar four for 26).
