Interesting: Visitors at an exhibition to mark National Technology Day 2008 in Mysore on Sunday. MYSORE: The city-based Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) has managed to combine research and development activities with innovative business opportunities. DFRL showcased its products at an exhibition to mark National Technology Day 2008 on Sunday. Established mainly to cater to the requirements of the Indian defence services, the DFRL specialises in preparation of ration packets. In recent times, it has transferred technology to nearly 220 entrepreneurs. The DFRL has embarked upon a mission to design, develop and evaluate, safe and nutritious convenience foods to meet the needs of the defence services which would also benefit civilians. It has developed a compressed cereal bar which contains rice, sugar, milk, nuts and raisins. It is a ready-to eat energy bar with good calorific value to enhance energy needs. The ration packs developed for the defence services provide the necessary requirement of 3,700 calories. It is used during operations by armed personnel. The ration pack is popular among the police, para military forces , mountaineers and trekkers. The DFRL has passed on the necessary information regarding processing and packaging of items to entrepreneurs. Another supplementary combo ration pack has been designed for short sustenance needs. It contains pulav and halwa mixes. The pack also provides three servings of tea, a foldable stove and hexamine tablets for outdoor cooking. The DFRL has also developed a chapatti making machine. 1,200 chapattis can be made in one hour using the machine. It consumes less than 4 KW of power and only five kg of LPG per hour while occupying very little space. This makes it easy for a unit to use it during operations. The other packs brought out by the DFRL include the commando pack ration, survival ration pack for the Navy, emergency flying ration for air crew. It has also developed special rations for people on expeditions to Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga and Nandadevi.
