Congress, CPI, TDP corporators firm on tour

The tour of north Indian cities and towns to begin on May 17

Corporators address a joint press conference

New corporators need to get exposure, they say

VIJAYAWADA: The ruling Congress and the Opposition CPI and the TDP have resolved to go on the proposed ‘study tour’ to some north Indian cities and towns as scheduled from May 17, “come what may”.

‘Indispensable’

Addressing a joint press conference on Saturday, Kunuku Rajasekhar, P. Gowtham Reddy and Y. Ramana, floor leaders of the Congress, the CPI and the TDP, respectively, in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) general body, asserted that the study tour was indispensable because as many as 45 corporators were newly elected and they needed to get some exposure about the implementation of developmental programmes in other cities. The tour would also give them an opportunity to understand the “nitty gritty and nuances” of administration and municipal Acts, they claimed.

Asked how many new corporators were given a chance, Mr. Rajasekhar evaded a direct reply. “The list is yet to be finalised,” was his cryptic reply.

Mr. Gowtham Reddy said, “The tour will help us learn and observe the implementation of various schemes and programmes. Our presence will put a check on possible disagreeable developments as happened earlier.”

Mr. Ramana said he was not joining the tour so that new corporators could get a chance. Some five to six corporators under the leadership of his deputy K. Vimala Kumari would take part in the tour.

Plea to CPI(M)

The leaders said that the tour was to understand the developments and implementation of JNNURM schemes in other cities. The tour was being organised keeping aside political differences. “We appeal to CPI(M) corporators to take part in the tour. The CPI(M) can name two of its corporators if it is not interested in sending all the corporators,” they said.
