Technician ends life; threat by recovery agents alleged
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: A computer technician, Krishnam Raju, 36, ended his life by hanging in the office of a software company at East Marredpally on Friday, the Tukaramgate police said.
Though no specific complaint was lodged, his relatives charged that Krishnam Raju committed suicide due to pressure mounted by loan recovery agents of ICICI Bank, Tukaramgate Sub-Inspector Venugopal told reporters.
Hailing from West Godavari, Krishnam Raju used to work as contract computer technician. He used to live at his uncle’s house in Malkajgiri.
A few months ago, he reportedly secured Rs. 50,000 loan from the bank but failed to repay it. Recovery agents hired by the bank began mounting pressure on Raju. The victim’s uncle told police that the recovery agents repeatedly came to his house and threatened Krishnam Raju of dire consequences if he failed to clear the loan.
Phone call
“Even while we’re shifting the body, one recovery agent rang up on the victim’s mobile phone seeking to know about the loan repayment,” Mr. Venugopal said.
However, the police registered a case of suspicious death under Section 167 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Action would be initiated against the recovery agents if a specific complaint is filed, he added.
