TDP seeks Minister’s removal

Special Correspondent

Takes exception to Raghuveera Reddy’s remarks against EC orders

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam party has demanded the removal of Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy from the Cabinet for openly defying the Constitution and the Constitutional body, Election Commission’s orders.

Addressing a press conference, TDP leaders -- M. V. Mysoora Reddy and D. Umamaheswara Rao -- said by this time, the Governor should have taken note of the Minister’s threatening remarks finding fault with the Commission for suspending “rythu chaitanya yatra” and saying he was prepared to be even jailed.

It was surprising that a Minister holding a responsible post who took the oath to protect the Constitution should challenge the Commission, they said.

“We will petition the Commission to proceed against the Minister”, Dr. Mysoora Reddy said.

Mr. Raghuveera Reddy may not know but even the founders of the Constitution realised that the Government of the day would take advantage of the situation, hence created an independent Election Commission and framed rules barring any policy announcements and programmes that would influence the voters, they said, reading out the provisions.

The argument put forward by the Government that the ‘yatra’ along with ‘praja patham’, were ongoing while increase in the income limit for white ration card holders beneficial to the people does not hold water, as these could have been done four years ago. Why only now at the time of byelections? Was the Government sleeping all this time? And why not after byelections?, they asked.
