Tobacco fetches an all-time high price

Special Correspondent

ONGOLE: Tobacco fetched an all-time high price of Rs. 118 per kg at Jangareddygudem, thanks to lottery system introduced at five auction platforms in Northern Light Soils (NLS) on Thursday.

Andhra Pradesh Virginia Tobacco growers welfare association president Y. Sivaji said that the lottery system broke nexus between auction officials and traders and helped farmers get higher price for their produce. He appealed to growers in Southern Light Soils of Prakasam district to unite and fight for lottery system to get higher price for their produce too.

Dr. Sivaji said that tobacco prices started looking up this year mainly due to production shortfall in Zimbabwe and Brazil leading to spurt in demand for Indian tobacco. But the traders conspired with auction officials to stem competition and peg prices.

Tobacco growers realized the foul play and boycotted the auctions demanding allotment of bales by lottery system to traders who bid the same price.
