Air cargo workers on warpath

NEDUMBASSERY: As part of the efforts to ‘invite attention’ of the management to the plight of air cargo workers at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), Air Cargo Co-ordination Committee, formed jointly by trade unions of air cargo workers at the airport, will conduct a mass gathering on May 12. State level leaders of all the trade unions are expected to participate in the meeting to be held at the entrance of the cargo terminal.

The leaders of the co-ordination committee, in a press conference, accused the management of not affecting a pay hike for the last eight years and neglecting the demands of the trade unions.

They said that these labourers were earning an income of just Rs.2,500-3,000 a month, as they get employment once in every five days.

They said that the management was trying to separate the workers from their leadership and asked the management to immediately withdraw from the efforts to thwart trade unionism among the airport labourers. The committee has been demanding a welfare package for their workers that include identity cards, insurance care and other facilities for the labourers.

The leaders also warned the management of a complete standstill in the cargo section unless their demands were met in a couple of weeks. The leadership held the view that since CIAL was their principal employer, it was the airport management who should initiate steps benefiting their workers.

Meanwhile, the airport officials said that the welfare package placed by the labour union was already under the consideration of the court and therefore declined to comment on the issue.

However, they informed that the management was seriously considering some of the demands put forward by the unions.
