NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel along with 15 other global telecommunications majors on Wednesday signed a formal construction and maintenance agreement in London to build the Europe-India Gateway (EIG) cable system at a cost of over $700 million. The first direct, high-bandwidth optical-fibre submarine cable system from India to the U.K. will significantly enhance capacity and diversity to connect India to West Asia and Europe. The 15,000-km cable system will connect 13 countries across three continents and is expected to carry commercial traffic by second quarter of 2010, a company statement said. Airtel is the only Indian service provider to be a part of this consortium. The other members of the EIG cable consortium include AT&T, BT, C&W, Djibouti Telecom, Du, Gibtelecom, IAM, Libyan Telecom, MTN Group Ltd., Omantel, PT Comunicações-S.A, Saudi Telecom Company, Telecom Egypt, Telkom SA Ltd, and Verizon Business. The state-of-the-art, next generation cable system will provide upgradeable transmission facilities. Beyond the Airtel cable landing station in India (Mumbai), additional cable landings will be provided in the U.K., Portugal, Gibraltar, Morocco, Monaco, France, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
