Manipur recruits 300 SPOs

Iboyaima Laithangbam

Imphal: The Manipur government, which announced its decision to provide arms to villagers to enable them to protect themselves from militants, has completed recruitment of 300 Special Police Officers at Heirok, despite objections from civil organisations. Another 200 SPOs will soon be recruited at Chajing.

The Cabinet on Tuesday reviewed the response from villagers and decided to issue firearms to those in rural and hard-to-access areas where police and security forces cannot be deployed effectively.

Director-General of Police Yumnam Joykumar said more SPOs would be recruited in other villages.
