Students can interact with subject experts SITs being upgraded to facilitate video-conferencing THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An interactive satellite-based programme, ‘Athidhiyodothu Alpaneram,’ that provides an opportunity to students for one-to-one interaction with experts on various subjects has been launched by the ViCTERS channel of the IT@School project. The programme started in early May by the Department of General Education enables students to participate in discussions through the district-level Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs). Some of the topics featured in the programme are career guidance, time management, discussions on psychology, literature, culture, cinema, life experiences, legal and social issues and administration. The programmes are telecast on Thursdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and re-telecast from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturdays and Tuesdays, the programme will be telecast from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and then from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. According to executive director of IT@School K. Anvar Sadath, unlike usual educational programmes in which only children in Thiruvananthapuram get a chance to interact with the guests, under Athidhiyodothu Alpaneram children from even Wayanad could talk to the guests. The programmes have been designed to educate and entertain the students at the same time. IT@School is currently in the process of technically upgrading the 19 SITs for video-conferencing. Some of the personalities who will be interviewed on the show are Education Minister M.A. Baby, dramatist and lyricist Kavalam Narayana Panicker, writer George Onakkur, poets D. Vinayachandran and Hridayakumari, educationist B. Ekbal, sculptor Kanai Kunhiraman, architect Sankar, cartoonist P.V. Krishnan, psychiatrist P.M. Mathew Vellur, traveller Santhosh George Kulangara and film personalities Thilakan, Shaji N. Karun and Nedumudi Venu. In addition to ‘Athidhiyodothu Alpaneram,’ ViCTERS channel has also launched ‘Thullikal,’ a programme on experiments and games based on mathematics and science. Yet another highlight of the shows is that they are anchored and presented by students selected from various city schools. ‘Thullikal’ is telecast on Friday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and re-telecast from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Wednesdays and Sundays, it will be telecast from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. It may be noted that apart from the Receive Only Terminals situated in schools, ViCTERS channel is currently available through the local cable network as well.
