“Bush’s remarks a cruel joke”

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Defence Minister A.K. Antony has termed U.S. President George Bush’s remark on Indian food consumption a “cruel joke.” He was speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of an International Magic Festival here on Sunday.

Mr. Bush had ascribed the rise in global food prices partly to the prosperity of the middle class in India, which had led to a demand for more nutritious food. Mr. Antony said the diversion of millions of hectares for bio-fuel cultivation in the U.S. was one of the primary reasons for food scarcity at the global level.
