“We belong to Congress of Sonia Gandhi and G.K. Vasan”

A meeting of party workers seek action against former district presidents

COIMBATORE: A meeting of the Coimbatore district unit Congress workers in the city on Sunday demanded action against former district presidents for actions that were against the party.

A resolution adopted in this regard did not, however, name them. Valparai MLA Kovai Thangam was divested of the post of urban district president last month. Two other rural district presidents P.V. Mani and Kuniamuthur Arumugham also lost their posts.

They observed a fast here on April 15, condemning their being removed from the posts. They had alleged that Nilgiris MP R. Prabhu was behind this.

Mr. Thangam and the others were members of the erstwhile Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) that later merged with the Congress.

“We were not invited. And, we would not have gone even if we had been invited, because the meeting was organised by Prabhu Congress,” Mr. Thangam said. “We belong to the Congress of Sonia Gandhi and G.K. Vasan,” he asserted.

On the resolution for action, Mr. Thangam said the fast he and the others observed was justified and that they hoped for justice from Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Reacting to Mr. Thangam’s remarks, Mr. Prabhu asked: “Where is the need to invite Congress members to a meeting of our own party?” Anyone with a “Congress feeling in the heart” should have come to the meeting that was a Congress family affair.

Mr. Prabhu refuted charges that the members of the erstwhile TMC were denied posts. “Both the present district presidents are members of the TMC,” he pointed out. “I believe that all Congress members should work together and there should be not talk of TMC.”
