THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Union Minister for Defence A.K. Antony has termed the remark made by U.S. President George Bush on Indian food consumption a “cruel joke.” He was speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of an International Magic Festival organised jointly by the Magic Academy and the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation in the city on Sunday. Mr. Bush had ascribed the rise in global food prices to the prosperity of the middle class in India, which had led to a demand for more nutritious food. Mr. Antony said the diversion of millions of hectares for bio-fuel cultivation in the U.S. was one of the primary reasons for food scarcity at the global level. If anybody was to be blamed for food scarcity, it should be the U.S. It should correct its mistake at least now, he added.
