Mercury climbs further; five more die

New Delhi: The debilitating heat claimed five lives in Orissa, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh with the mercury climbing further as Delhi, Shimla and Churu recorded the season’s highest temperature and dust storms buffeted parts of the northern belt on Sunday.

Overcast skies and a weather forecast about squalls at a few places in the next two days offered hope of a respite from the weather even as a nor’wester that hit some districts in West Bengal left three persons, including two children, dead and several injured.

Hisar in Haryana was the hottest place in the country, posting an overnight high of 45.2 degrees Celsius (6 degrees above normal) while two youths succumbed in the hot weather in Amritsar in neighbouring Punjab.

Dry winds blew across Rajasthan, which has been wilting under the heat for the past week, with the mercury touching 45 C in Churu and over the 43-degree mark in other towns.

There was also a report of an isolated squall following a dustorm in Sawai Madhopur district late on Saturday night.

It was no better for summer holidayers as Shimla recorded a season’s high of 28.7, much to the discomfort of residents and tourists alike who are coping with an unprecedented water crisis. Una was the hottest place at 42.8 C PTI
