Compensation for rape victim
New Delhi: Acting on the directions of the Supreme Court, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has recommended a compensation of Rs.2 lakh in instalments to a rape victim, starting from the time the first information report (FIR) is filed.
In a report submitted to the Women and Child Development Ministry, the Commission also suggested formation of a special monitoring board to ensure the implementation of the scheme.
The Supreme Court had directed the commission to evolve a “scheme so as to wipe out the tears of unfortunate victims of rape.”
The Commission, in its report ’Scheme for Relief and Rehabilitation of Victims of Rape, 2005’, has recommended that after a rape victim lodges an FIR, she should get compensation of Rs.2 lakh in instalments.
The first installment of Rs 20,000 has to be given to the victim when she registers the FIR, said the NCW.
The second installment of Rs 50,000 is recommended after police investigation confirms the rape.- PTI
