SALEM: Work on the second phase of Tirumanimutharu River project is progressing according to schedule. Salem Corporation has completed over 20 per cent of the project, which commenced in October last year. Second phaseThe second phase will take up lining of the bed and the bunds of Tirumanimutharu, a major river-turned-sewer that traverses through the heart of the city, 590 metre upstream starting from Anaimed and 2,210 metre downstream from Apsara Theatre. The civic body has divided the project into nine packages and started most of the works listed under all of them. Works to reconstruct three major bridges across Tirumanimutharu River have begun recently. The lining of the bed and the bunds of Vellakuttai Odai, a major drainage channel that joins the river near the old bus stand, has also begun. The entire course of the channel will be cemented to ensure smooth flow of waste water. Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman said the civic administration had asked the company, which bagged the contract, to increase manpower to speed up the works. Schedule“We are very positive that the project will be completed by December this year as per the schedule,” Mr. Jayaraman said. The second phase of the project will cost Rs. 31.50 crore. In the first phase, the civic body lined the river course and the bunds to a length of 1,500 metres between Ananda Bridge and Apsara Theatre a few years ago.
