Srikumar is new DGP

BANGALORE: The State Government on Saturday appointed R. Srikumar as the new Director-General and Inspector-General of Police, as the incumbent K.R. Srinivasan has gone on leave on medical grounds. Mr. Srikumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation (KSPHC), took charge in the evening.

Mr. Sri Kumar is the senior-most IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre after Mr. Srinivasan. He was recently asked by the Election Commission to oversee the arrangements for the polls.

Mr. Srikumar had a long stint in CBI. He also headed Stamp Paper Investigation Team (STAMPIT), the special investigation team of the State that went into the multi-crore stamp paper racket allegedly run by Abdul Kareem Telgi, before it was handed over to CBI.

Mr. Srikumar served in various capacities, including Additional Director-General of Police (CoD) and as Director (Vigilance) of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation.

Mr. Srikumar has been associated with Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation since 2001. He has been credited with introducing web-based project management system, e-billing and eco-friendly initiatives such as Green Building concepts in the Corporation.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Srikumar said there was a big responsibility on him on maintaining law and order for the peaceful conduct of elections.
