NCC aims at 33 per cent quota for girls

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as the politicians are making hue and cry on providing 33 per cent reservation for women in the State legislatures and Parliament, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) group in Andhra Pradesh is silently implementing 33 per cent reservation for girls and aims to reach the target in the next five years.

Deputy Director-General, AP NCC Directorate, Air Commodore A.C. Bharali, who was on a farewell visit to the city, told “The Hindu” that out of the 1.40 lakh NCC cadets in the State, 26 per cent are girls and that included both junior and senior wing NCC. The girl cadets were only 22 per cent just two years back, he pointed out and added that in the next five years the goal of enrolling 33 per cent girls in the organisation would be achieved. He said the defence forces had earmarked 20 per cent of its total officers posts to NCC girl cadets with “C” certificate. It is 10 per cent for male cadets. Such candidates also need not write any tests. The NCC directorate had also started cadet counselling programme in rural areas to explain them about the advantages of joining the armed forces

This year the directorate would hold an exclusive army recruitment rally for NCC cadets to enable them to join the army in non-officers posts. The rally would be held throughout the State in the next few months, he said.

Earlier, he distributed best cadet award for the Vizag group NCC cadets. The cadets who received the award included Senior Under Officer P Swati (who drove micro flight in solo).
