MAJOR INITIATIVE: A section of players participating in the inaugural function of The Hindu-sponsored summer coaching camp of the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association at the ACA-VDCA stadium in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: That the twenty20 format and the Indian Premier League have created a huge impact is evident in the response the annual summer coaching camps of the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA), sponsored by The Hindu, have received.

The final figure of players selected for the camps in the past was around 150 to 200 but this time the number of applications was a staggering 3,600 plus and after trials 691 players, including 30 girls have been selected to undergo training at six venues in the city and one each at Bheemunipatnam and Anakapalle.

VDCA has made efforts to take its facilities to the centres outside the city and it received good response as 110 players at Anakapalle and 76 at Bheemunipatnam were selected for the camps.

The inaugural function of the camps at the ACA-VDCA stadium here on Friday was attended by more than 500 players, excluding those from Anakapalle and Bheemli. Parents of a large number of players were also present. Probably this was for the first time that the stadium has seen a gathering of such a large number of players.

The camps are being held in the under-13, under-16 and under-19 age groups and boys in under-10 and under-11 are also selected. VDCA has engaged as many as 35 coaches for the camps. The camp at Anakapalle commences on May 6.

Chief of Bureau of The Hindu B. Prabhakkara Sharma inaugurated the camps. VDCA vice-president P.R. Narayanaswami, secretary K. Parthasaradhi, former Andhra Ranji captain M.N. Ravikumar, joint secretaries J.K.M. Raju and A.P. Naidu and others were present.

The camps will be held at ACA-VDCA stadium, Ukku stadium, Zinc stadium, Port stadium, Railway stadium, GVMC stadium, Bheemunipatnam and Anakapalle.
