New fish market starts functioning

Nearly 50 vendors shift their shops to the venue

THANJAVUR: The new fish market constructed at a cost of Rs.40 lakh by Thanjavur Municipality has started functioning at Ravuthapalayam.

Shedding their reluctance nearly 50 fish vendors has shifted their shops to the new market from the congested, dilapidated unhygienic old market at Keelavasal.

The new fish market has a big parking area in front, shops with tiled walls and mosaic floor, pucca drainage facility with one pipeline for each shop to flush out water and fish wastes, one electric light for each shop.

The new market has very good drinking water facility, toilets and bathrooms for traders to use. Wholesale marketing is also done in the new market.

“The new market is very convenient to us and also for consumers. Women and men can conveniently purchase fishes. In the old market there was no adequate space and hence consumers stood like a crowd and purchased,” said K. Ramu, President of the Thanjai Meen Vivyabarigal Nala Sangam. Dhanalakshmi, a buyer said that the new market was very hygienic and good. There are 65 shops in the new market.

Fishes come from Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Pondicherry, Rameswaram and other states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh to the market.

A modern slaughter house has also been constructed by the Municipality at a cost of Rs.30 lakh near the fish market.

“Works in the slaughter house has been completed and soon it will be opened for use. Heater facility for using hot water, toilet and bathroom facilities have been made in the slaughter house. The animals will be made to wait for sometime in a waiting room and sent for slaughter one by one. Parking area and garden have been provided in the front,” Municipality officials said.
